A Welsh Coastal Gem Where Family Memories Were Made
By: Yamin Ismail | Date: 01/10/2022
Just returned from the most magical family reunion in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, with all 9 of us together. There's something special about this corner of Wales that brings people closer – perhaps it's the stunning coastal views, the charming harbour, or the warm Welsh hospitality that greeted us everywhere we went. Fishguard sits beautifully on the Pembrokeshire Coast, where the land meets the Irish Sea in a symphony of cliffs, coves, and coastal paths. On the day we chose for our walk, the weather was perfectly balanced – mild temperatures with gentle breezes that carried the scent of sea salt and heather across the promenade. We explored the Marine Walk, a paved pathway that hugs the coastline and offers breathtaking views without the challenge of steep climbs.
Starting from Lower Town, where colourful cottages line the quayside, we strolled at a leisurely pace, pausing frequently to admire the dramatic volcanic cliffs that tell stories from 470 million years ago. The path was wonderfully even underfoot, making it perfect for our family group of varying ages and fitness levels.
The harbour itself is a picture of tranquillity, nestled between steep hills. As we walked, we spotted the Fishguard Herrings sculpture – a beautiful bronze tribute to the town's historic fishing industry. The coastal views stretched from Dinas Head round to Goodwick, each vista more captivating than the last.
We took our time, stopping on benches overlooking the bay to chat, laugh, and be present with one another. The rugged Pembrokeshire coastline provided the perfect backdrop for family photographs, with gorse blazing golden yellow against the green slopes and the deep blue sea beyond.
From dramatic clifftop views to cosy moments together on the promenade, every step reminded us of how precious family time is. The beauty of nature's environment surrounded us, from the seabirds wheeling overhead to the wildflowers dotting the coastal slopes. This wasn't a challenging hike – it was a gentle celebration of being together in one of Wales's most beautiful corners.
