Gordon Promenade, Gravesend

Thames-Side Reflections on a Remarkable Journey

By: Yamin Ismail | Date: 01/02/2023 | Milestone: 10% Complete | Statistics: 792 miles | 1,584,000 steps | 117,645 calories | 181 days

❤️ I'm thrilled to share that I've reached 10% of my Earth's Diameter Challenge – walking the full 7,926 miles around our planet! Gordon Promenade in Gravesend, Kent, marks a significant milestone in my walking journey. This historic riverside location, where the Thames begins its widening voyage to the sea, provided the perfect setting to reflect on the first 10% of my challenge. On a crisp February morning, with balanced weather conditions and clear skies, I set out along the promenade's paved walkway. The path runs parallel to the River Thames, offering unobstructed views across the water towards Tilbury and the Essex marshlands beyond. The surface was smooth and even – precisely the kind of comfortable terrain I seek for these contemplative walks.

Gordon Promenade

Every step brings me closer to this incredible goal – and reminds me why I love inspiring others to get active outdoors. Let's keep moving!

Insha'Allah, the finish line awaits at 7,926 miles.

What started as a personal journey after injury has become a testament to the power of walking poles and regular outdoor activity. Each step along Gordon Promenade felt purposeful, measured, meaningful. The promenade sits steeped in history, part of the Saxon Shore Way and the starting point of the magnificent Wealdway. Historical defences have guarded this stretch of the Thames since Iron Age times, and walking here connects me not just to my own journey but to centuries of travellers who've passed this way.

I paused several times to breathe in the river air and admire the environment. A cruise ship moved slowly down the Thames, heading out to sea – a reminder that journeys, whether by foot or by water, are about the steady accumulation of distance, one step at a time.

As I walked, the morning light glinted off the Thames, and I couldn't help but think about the 792 miles already logged. The beauty of this location lies in its simplicity, paved paths, river views, and the peaceful rhythm of walking beside flowing water.

It's not dramatic or challenging, but that's precisely what makes it perfect for reflection and contemplation.
